Danita Crews’ story is a powerful example of resilience, support, and transformation. She first heard about Palmetto Excel Center from her cousin, who had enrolled in the tuition-free adult charter high school and encouraged her to do the same. Inspired by her cousin’s positive experience and the school’s supportive environment, Danita decided to seek similar growth and fulfillment.

Facing her own set of challenges as a single parent with a lack of educational opportunities in her earlier years, Danita never found time to reenter the classroom. With her son now an adult, she had the time and space to focus on her education and pursue her goal of earning a high school diploma.

From the moment she began taking classes at the Palmetto Excel Center, Danita felt a strong sense of support and community. The fear and embarrassment she initially felt about returning to school at age 40 quickly dissipated. The environment was welcoming, and she was surrounded by others who shared her determination and drive. Along her new path to a diploma, the Palmetto Excel Center provided educational support and a culture of encouragement and respect.

Danita’s journey was marked by personal milestones. She married shortly after beginning school, and her husband’s support played a crucial role in her success. He encouraged her to focus on her studies and dedicate herself to being a full-time student. This opportunity helped Danita fulfill her long-held personal goal of overcoming the childhood trauma of dropping out of school to become a mother.

Reflecting on her experience, Danita said, “There were times when people didn’t realize I didn’t have my high school diploma. It was always something in the back of my mind that I needed to complete to overcome that childhood trauma.”

At Palmetto Excel, Danita found a place where everyone was willing to help each other succeed. The break room conversations, shared experiences, and collective encouragement created a familial atmosphere. This culture of support was integral to her educational journey, making her feel valued and understood.

Danita explained, “We created a culture of support. We saw each other every day, and it felt like a family.”

Danita’s story is a testament to the power of education and the importance of a supportive community. She learned that by holding herself accountable and showing up every day, she could achieve her goals. Her school experience empowered her to earn her high school diploma and transformed her self-perception. She no longer felt embarrassed about her educational background but rather empowered by her achievements.
