For Stephanie Smith, holding a steady job meant more than earning a paycheck — it was the foundation for a brighter future. Adopted at an early age, Stephanie spent 13 years in a supported residential program for individuals with disabilities. Growing up in a large family with 18 siblings, she always dreamed of having a place to call her own.

In 2014, she joined Palmetto Goodwill Services as a food service team member, becoming part of the AbilityOne Program. The program is a federal initiative that provides employment opportunities for individuals with significant disabilities. Through this partnership, Palmetto Goodwill Services creates stable jobs that allow team members to gain valuable skills, financial independence, and long-term career growth.

“I’ve learned many valuable life lessons during my time with Palmetto Goodwill,” Stephanie shares. “Palmetto Goodwill provided tremendous support and has given me the opportunity to maintain a steady job for years to come.”

Her work at Joint Base Charleston has provided more than just a paycheck — it has provided financial stability, workplace connections, independence, and personal growth opportunities. But Stephanie’s dedication and determination, along with the support of Palmetto Goodwill Services and the AbilityOne Program, has also brought her something she always dreamed of — homeownership.

Stephanie’s journey to independence was only beginning, though. In 2017, she reached a major personal milestone when she earned her driver’s license and purchased her first car giving her greater freedom and making her more self-sufficient.

Still, she knew the path to become a homeowner was her ultimate goal and it wouldn’t be easy. That’s when she turned to Habitat for Humanity, a program dedicated to making affordable homeownership possible.

Thanks to her commitment, perseverance, and the support of both Palmetto Goodwill Services and Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County, Stephanie’s dream became a reality. Her steady employment at Palmetto Goodwill Services positioned her to take the necessary financial steps toward homeownership, while Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County helped her secure an affordable housing opportunity.

In an exciting start to 2025, Stephanie moved into her new home shortly after ringing in the new year, marking a major turning point in her journey.

For Stephanie, this home is more than just four walls—it represents freedom, stability, and the ability to create lasting memories. She can now welcome her brothers, sisters,

and mother, into a space that is all hers and where they can gather and celebrate together as a family.

In a video interview with Habitat for Humanity, Stephanie shares, “Owning a home means so much to me because I finally have a place to call my own. It’s a dream I’ve had for years, and now it’s a reality.”

Stephanie’s story is a testament that with the right opportunities, dreams of independence and homeownership can become reality—one step, one paycheck, and one key at a time.
