April is recognized as Second Chance Month, a national effort to raise awareness about the challenges faced by justice-involved individuals and to highlight the importance of creating opportunities for meaningful reentry. At Palmetto Goodwill, the I-CAN program is one way those second chances come to life—offering structure, support, and stability for individuals who are ready to move forward.
I-CAN, short for Individual Career and Academic Navigation, is a 12-week, full-time, paid reentry program that provides career coaching, skill development, job placement, and wraparound services. Designed specifically for those reentering society after incarceration, the program helps participants overcome barriers and begin rebuilding with confidence.
For Seth, who was released after serving 16 years, that support was life changing.
“It was hard and discouraging because I kept getting turned down for jobs because of my background,” he said. After so many years away from society, the biggest challenge wasn’t just finding work—it was learning how to adjust to the “free world.”
“The hardest challenge was transitioning from incarceration to freedom,” he shared. It was overwhelming, and it left his future feeling uncertain. But everything started to change when he connected with the Carolina Forest Career Opportunity Center, where a Success Coach referred him to the I-CAN program.
“I needed help and an opportunity,” Seth said. He entered the program determined to gain stability, learn how to navigate life outside of prison, and manage his emotions without losing motivation.
“To complete the program and learn how to manage myself in free-work society. Not allow my emotions to make me discouraged.”
With the help of employability workshops, staff encouragement, and a consistent schedule, Seth began to find his footing.
“It gave me a foundation and structure and stability,” he said.
After completing the I-CAN program, he was offered a full-time role at Palmetto Goodwill as a Retail Team Member II – Wares Pricer at the Little River location.
His growth didn’t go unnoticed.
“Seth has made growth in his communication and has gained confidence during his time in the I-CAN program,” said one team leader. “Despite the barriers he faced, his determination propelled him to achieve his goals.”
Seth was also known for his respectful and thoughtful approach with both staff and peers, creating a positive presence in the workplace.
Looking back, he sees just how far he’s come.
“Today my future looks bright. Before, it was bleak and uncertain.”
Now, he’s setting his sights on the next goal: a promotion to Team Leader. He also wants to continue adjusting to life outside of incarceration while making steady progress in his role.
“I see myself more confident now,” he said. “Taking advantage of the opportunity is what I’m most proud of.”
When asked what a second chance means, Seth didn’t hesitate:
“It means it’s my only chance to get it right—and I’m taking full advantage of it.”
His advice to others returning home from incarceration is clear and heartfelt:
“I know a great program if you want to get your life straight. Then I would tell them about the I-CAN program. They have great people who want to help you, and it is a great first step.”
