For Lee, recovery didn’t happen overnight — it took humility, hard work, and the courage to keep trying.
Born and raised in Kansas City, Lee spent much of his life caught in gang activity and addiction. After a long history of incarceration, he was released in 2019 determined to break the cycle. But following a difficult divorce, he found himself homeless, jobless, and at a crossroads.
That turning point came during his third stay at New Directions, a recovery-focused transitional housing program. Though he had been asked to leave twice before, something was different this time. “The light bulb went off,” Lee said. “I knew I was the problem. I had to change.”
With encouragement from New Directions staff, Lee enrolled in Palmetto Goodwill’s I-CAN Reentry Program — a full-time, paid 12-week program that helps individuals with justice-involved backgrounds overcome barriers to employment through career training, support services, and job placement.
Lee committed fully to the program. Through I-CAN, he gained critical skills that prepared him to reenter the workforce and build a new foundation for his future. “The I-CAN program taught me accountability and how to be part of society again. It saved my life.” Lee said.
In addition to completing the program, Lee recently celebrated one full year of sobriety — his longest period of recovery to date. He also graduated from I-CAN and was invited to speak at the program’s ceremony, where he shared his journey and offered encouragement to others taking similar steps toward change.
Lee is now working toward certification as a peer support specialist and recovery coach, motivated by a desire to help others find hope and healing.
Palmetto Goodwill Success Coach Lori describes him as resilient, driven and committed to lasting growth.
“He used to get anxious about change, but he pushed through and believed in himself,” she said. “Now he motivates new groups and shows them it’s possible.”
Lee hopes his story shows that with the right support and mindset, real change is possible.
“If I can do it, anyone can,” Lee said.
