Angie is Redefining What’s Possible After Reentry

April is recognized as Second Chance Month, a national effort to raise awareness about the challenges faced by justice-involved individuals and highlights the importance of opportunities for redemption and growth. At Palmetto Goodwill, the I-CAN program is designed to do exactly that—equipping participants with the tools, support, and structure needed to build a stable, meaningful future.

I-CAN, short for Individual Career and Academic Navigation, is a 12-week, full-time, paid program that offers career coaching, skill development, job placement, and supportive services for individuals seeking to overcome employment barriers after incarceration. More than that, it’s a place where people regain their confidence and discover what they’re truly capable of.

That’s exactly what happened for Angie, a Surfside resident who joined the program with a clear goal in mind.

“Before entering the I-CAN program, I was struggling with finding employment and felt like I was stuck in a revolving cycle,” she said. After years of setbacks and feeling overlooked due to her background, she was looking for something that could finally move her forward.

Her caseworker at the South Carolina Department of Social Services introduced her to the program. Angie enrolled with one goal: “To finish the first four weeks.”

But what started as a short-term commitment became a turning point. In fall 2024, Angie successfully graduated from the I-CAN program—an accomplishment that marked the beginning of major personal and professional growth.

She quickly proved to be a standout participant. Through hard work and consistency, Angie became the first I-CAN graduate in the Grand Strand region to be promoted to store lead, demonstrating what’s possible when someone is given a real opportunity to succeed.

Chad, I-CAN Program Manager, witnessed her transformation.
“Angie made positive strides in her leadership skills and confidence,” he said. “She became an advocate for every I-CAN team member in the program.”

Her influence extended beyond her promotion. Angie led by example—encouraging others in the program to keep going and showing that long-term goals were within reach.

Today, her life looks completely different.

“It is wonderful,” she said. “I would have never thought I’d be here almost a year ago.”

To Angie, being given a second chance meant more than a new job title—it meant finally being seen, supported, and believed in.
“Finally someone listened—and someone did something and gave me that second chance,” she said.
