When Jarrod relocated from Rochester, NY to Charleston, SC, he was ready for a fresh start—but uncertain where to begin. With a Class C license and experience as a bus driver, he knew he wanted a better future. One day, while adjusting to life in a new city, he spotted a truck with “Miller-Motte Driving Institute” printed on the side. That moment sparked a new vision. “It just clicked for me,” Jarrod said. “I knew I wanted to call and learn more.”
Looking for guidance, Jarrod connected with Palmetto Goodwill, where he learned about the SNAP2Work program—a resource that provides free job training and employment support to individuals receiving SNAP benefits. Through this program, he was paired with Career Navigator Ciara, who helped him outline a plan, build job readiness skills, and apply for CDL training.
Despite balancing three part-time jobs to stay financially stable, Jarrod remained committed. According to Ciara, his dedication never wavered; he communicated consistently, met every deadline, and approached each task with determination.
“Palmetto Goodwill provided structure, support, and eventually helped cover the cost of trucking school,” Jarrod said. “They made it possible for me to stay focused and finish strong.”
After successfully completing his Class A CDL certification through Miller-Motte, Jarrod secured a full-time position with Republic Waste Services—achieving exactly what he set out to find: meaningful work, financial security, and a stable schedule.
“This career means stability, self-reliance, and the satisfaction of achieving a goal I set for myself,” he shared. “It’s everything I was looking for.”
