Since 2008, Kimberly has been on a journey of growth, resilience and self-discovery at Palmetto Goodwill. Over the past 15 years, she has transformed from a shy, uncertain individual into a confident and capable team member with a clear career goal: to become a receptionist in customer service. While she’s still working toward that goal, Kimberly’s progress is proof that with support and determination, anything is possible.
“I enjoy assisting customers by addressing their questions while shopping,” Kimberly said. That passion has fueled her commitment to learning and expanding her skill set in a variety of roles, including training as a cashier at the Rivers Avenue outlet store, helping with receptionist duties at the Career Opportunity Center and, most recently, supporting production while learning the new point-of-sale (POS) system at the Rivers Avenue retail store.
One of Kimberly’s biggest personal challenges has been managing her emotions and overcoming shyness in the workplace. “It’s been hard when people don’t see that I can complete assignments without being told,” she said. With continued support and career coaching, Kimberly has made significant strides in building her confidence.
“When I first started, my confidence was low,” she said. “But through training, I’ve gained more knowledge and the initiative to take on new tasks.”
She takes great pride in the progress she has made. From gaining confidence at the register and improving her computer skills to helping others in the Career Opportunity Center by making follow-up calls and posting job leads, Kimberly has become a valuable part of the team.
“I’m proud that I completed my computer classes and overcame my fear of working at the cash register,” she said.
A major part of Kimberly’s development has come through her participation in Palmetto Goodwill’s Enclave program, a Day Services initiative that supports individuals with disabilities through personalized coaching and real-world job training. Enclave participants work alongside team members in retail, office and service settings, gaining hands-on experience while developing problem-solving, communication and leadership skills.
Kimberly’s supervisor described her as reliable, punctual and positive, adding, “She sets a great example for her peers and has even self-taught many of her skills.” As a steady and respected presence within her group, Kimberly has embraced leadership through action – and continues to inspire others by showing what’s possible with time, effort and support.
Currently, Kimberly is working with the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs to explore employment opportunities outside of Goodwill. She is excited about the future and the chance to meet new people, grow through new experiences and learn more about herself.
Her journey is a reflection of Palmetto Goodwill’s mission: to provide equitable access to education, training and employment. Kimberly’s story proves that progress is powerful – and that purpose and passion can pave the way forward.
