Mechelle Moultrie entered into a Work Program with Goodwill Industries in May 2000. Initially, this program allowed individuals with disabilities to work in an enclave and taught them how to sort and hang clothing, price wares and build pallets...all back room functions of a retail store. The program has since been redesigned to help participants learn additional skills that will help them transition into employment in the community. Still working in an enclave environment and learning retail functions, they are also taught simple math skills and social skills to enhance their employability.
In January 2007, Mechelle transferred out of the Enclave and into a competitive position in the Rivers Avenue store to further develop her skills. For many, working with the public is overwhelming, but Mechelle has learned through the help of Goodwill Job Coaches and Employment Specialists to overcome her shyness. Mechelle now likes working on the sales floor and enjoys providing assistance to the customers.
Coworkers say that Mechelle has really opened up since arriving at Goodwill, smiling and even talking to others.
